Greensboro Symphony Youth Orchestra

(Partially funded by the Greensboro Symphony Guild – See Scholarships tab)

The Greensboro Symphony Youth Orchestra is a select ensemble for students through grade 12. Beginning originally as a single ensemble, the GSYO program has grown to include multiple groups with progressive educational goals. Members take part in weekly rehearsals, small group coaching by members of the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra, two to five public performances per year, an annual overnight retreat, domestic and international performing trips, and additional social and cultural activities. Currently, the Youth Orchestra has made many new practice and performance guidelines to keep all safe and healthy including outdoor practice venues, virtual auditions and performances. Now more than ever they need the support and encouragement of the entire Piedmont Triad community.

The GSYO has a YouTube Channel that provides a live stream of their Fall performances. Click here to view.

In addition, the News and Record has published an article highlighting the youth orchestra.

The GSYO’s websites and social media sites provide additional information, updates and concert schedules. Visit their Facebook page for the latest news.

Private, parochial and home school groups are also invited – contact the Greensboro Symphony Office (336-335-5456) for more information.

OrKIDStra Concerts

The Greensboro Symphony OrKIDStra series provides entertaining concerts for four-year old children and their families and combines classical music with the promotion of literacy and the development of positive social skills. These programs have taken many forms in the past and have been performed in venues from local Elementary Schools to Triad Stage.

CARING SOUND

The Greensboro Symphony Orchestra strives to give everyone the opportunity to hear and participate in music. The Juvenile Detention Center is a secure facility where a juvenile will stay while waiting to go to court or until a placement can be arranged. At the Center, the Greensboro Symphony provides small ensemble performances, group hand drumming sessions, and music for events such as high school graduations within the facility. Additionally, the musicians that participate in the Caring Sound program volunteer at Cone Hospital work with pediatric patients as well as patients with dementia. Look for additional updates as the Caring Sound program continues to develop and evolve.

(Partially funded – $6,000 – by the Symphony Guild)

Every March and April of every year, all third and fourth grade students in the Piedmont region travel to hear a dynamic program by the full Greensboro Symphony Orchestra. The Elementary School Concerts serve more than18,000 students in Guilford, Rockingham, Randolph, and Alamance Counties. These performances may also be attended by private school and home school groups, and students from other counties.

These concerts frequently include multimedia presentations and collaborations with the Greensboro Ballet. In addition to the concert experience, students and teachers receive educational resources and curriculum materials that support the concert theme. These materials help introduce new music to students, as well as, connect the concert theme to topics across the curriculum.

In-School Ensembles

In the winter and spring, all third and fourth grade students in Guilford County hear live performances in their schools. Musicians from the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra travel to schools and perform chamber music, demonstrate their instruments, and help students prepare for the Elementary School Concerts.

The program includes a string quintet, brass quintet, woodwind quintet and percussion trio. Ensembles visit different schools each year, so that students hear as many different instruments as possible.

High School Partnership Program

(This program is fully funded by the Greensboro Symphony Guild; each program costs $2,000 per year)

The High School Partnership Program features a quintet of Greensboro Symphony Orchestra principal players who perform with and/or coach high school orchestras followed by a performance before a Masterworks series concert. In addition to the quintet residencies, Greensboro Symphony Orchestra musicians travel to multiple schools for weekly group lessons, providing instrument-specific help to bring students to the next level, enabling them to become leaders within their ensembles.
